Pettis has once again been dubbed the next contender in the UFC lightweight division. This ultra-competitive division saw Pettis climb back up to the top position with impressive wins including a knock out Head Kick of Joe Lauzon.

Now, the fight Pettis must win is against his newest rival Cerrone on January 26th to put himself back as the Number 1 contender in the UFC Lightweight Division.

Dana White, UFC President, has stated that “Pettis deserves it… we’ll see what happens.”

Pettis, currently 15-2, and Cerrone, currently 19-4, are set for the main card in January at UFC on fox.

Clearly a lot has happened in the almost full year since Pettis has appeared with the UFC, but his next cage match against Donald Cerrone promises to be as exciting as they come.

Having won 6 of his own 7 fights since transitioning, a dangerous Cerrone is waiting for Pettis. Beginning in August, Cerrone took to the media and has used both strong performances and a well strategized verbal assault to force the fight with Pettis.

Pettis says, “The beefs 100-percent real… he had to lie about me ducking him, wanting to fight other people, and not wanting to fight him. I was calling out the guy (Diaz) who whooped him… but that fight didn’t happen. Nate got the title shot.”

Pettis continued, “He didn’t need to have to do that. I mean, call me out and let’s do it, that’s all you had to do. I’m very excited to have that fight and show him what’s up.”

Cerrone and Pettis enter the matchup as potential number-one contenders, creating an exciting atmosphere. The two have engaged in a war of words, leading up to the fight, which has added more of a personal grudge note to an already phenomenal pairing.

When asked about his upcoming matchup in the face of his illness, Pettis said his plan is still to fight Cerrone on Jan 26th. The feud continues as he laughed at Cerrone’s recent talk of being tired of waiting, and said that he looked forward to fighting the former WEC star.

“I’m not going to fight unhealthy.” Pettis said.

The Pettis-Cerrone matchup was delayed due to Pettis undergoing shoulder surgery over the summer. While his recent hospitalization had nothing to do with the surgery, fans were beginning to worry.

Pettis did dismiss the notion that the fight with Cerrone was for a No. 1 contender spot in the light-weight division, but the rumor continues to circulate.

Pettis demonstrated that previously offered but non-appearing title shots are the reason he chooses to focus solely on Cerrone.

“I don’t even care anymore,” he said, “until the contract is signed, I’m not thinking about that.”
